Europe holds up better as Asia stays mixed

European stocks mostly rise even as several major Asian benchmarks finish lower.

Europe has the stronger finish. The DAX rises 0.6% to 25,155.4, the CAC 40 adds 0.9% to 8,437.9 and the Stoxx 600 gains 0.6% to 646.9. The FTSE 100, however, slips 0.7% to 10,639.2.

Asia is mixed. The Nikkei 225 falls 0.2% to 66,115.6 and the Hang Seng drops 1.0% to 24,892.7, while the Shanghai Comp. is nearly flat at 3,867.0 and the Kospi gains 0.7% to 6,797.7. Australia’s ASX 200 adds 0.3% to 8,823.0.

Elsewhere, the Sensex slips 0.9% to 76,755.0 and the TSX Comp. falls 0.8% to 35,192.7. The Bovespa also loses 0.5% to 176,723.6. The global risk tone stays soft even where the local index closes higher.

The biggest global macro backdrop in the headlines is still tariffs and oil. CNBC Markets says Trump is set to slap sweeping new tariffs on 60 trade partners as global duties expire, while other headlines flag the market’s growing sensitivity to war and higher energy prices.
