Europe edges higher, Asia stays mixed, and the dollar slips

Global stocks mostly rise, but the region-by-region picture is scattered and FX moves lean against the dollar.

Overseas equities put in a mixed session. The Nikkei 225 rises 0.7%, the Hang Seng adds 0.2%, and India’s Sensex gains 0.4%. Europe is firmer, with the DAX up 0.6%, the CAC 40 up 0.9%, and the Stoxx 600 up 0.8%.

The rest of Asia is softer. The Shanghai Comp. falls 0.6% and the Kospi drops 1.2%. Australia’s ASX 200 also slips 0.8%. The result is a global tape that is positive in parts, but not broad-based.

FX tilts away from the dollar. The dollar index falls 0.2% to 99.803, EUR/USD rises 0.5% to 1.1527, GBP/USD gains 0.9% to 1.3487, and AUD/USD advances 1.0% to 0.7025. USD/JPY drops 1.7% to 157.4, while USD/CHF declines 0.7%.

Several currencies move sharply versus the dollar outside the majors too. USD/CNY falls 0.3%, USD/INR drops 0.4%, and USD/BRL loses 1.0%. USD/KRW is nearly flat at 1442.0699.
