Stocks rise across the board as oil and volatility fall

The main U.S. indexes finish higher, with broad sector gains and a softer tape in energy, rates, and volatility.

U.S. stocks end the day in the green. The S&P 500 rises 1.48% to 7,600.5, the Nasdaq Composite gains 2.13% to 25,913.8965, the Dow adds 1.32% to 53,178.4102, and the Russell 2000 climbs 1.73% to 2,981.9084. The S&P opens at 7,531.59 and spends the session climbing into the close.

The sector map is mostly positive. Communication services leads at 2.86%, industrials add 1.85%, discretionary rises 1.83%, tech gains 1.53%, and materials tack on 1.15%. Financials also advance 0.77%. Energy is the clear laggard, down 1.28%, while utilities, staples, and health finish near flat.

Volatility backs off. The VIX falls 0.81% to 15.86, and the VIX 9-day tumbles 21.19% to 13.28. The 3-month and 6-month volatility gauges also decline, a sign traders are pricing a calmer near-term path than the open would have implied.

Rates ease too. The 10-year Treasury yield drops 1.24% to 4.686, the 5-year falls 1.35% to 4.4, and the 30-year slips 0.83% to 5.231. Credit ETFs are lower, with LQD down 0.13%, HYG down 0.21%, and MUB down 0.18%.
