Europe rises, Asia splits, and U.S. risk appetite stays on
Global equities finish mixed, but Europe mostly follows Wall Street higher while Japan and China lag.
Europe closes mostly higher. The DAX rises 1.5%, the CAC 40 adds 1.2%, the FTSE 100 gains 0.2%, and the Stoxx 600 ends up 0.5%. The moves line up with a broader rally in U.S. equities and easing Treasury yields.
Asia is more uneven. The Hang Seng edges up 0.5%, but the Nikkei falls 0.9%, the Shanghai Composite slips 0.6%, and the Kospi drops 5.1%. The ASX 200 and Sensex both finish higher, up 0.5% and 0.7% respectively.
The global macro backdrop is still centered on energy and policy. CNBC reports oil tumbles after Bessent says a Strait of Hormuz deal may come this week, and Reuters headlines reference progress in efforts to end the U.S.-Iran war. That comes alongside a sharp drop in crude prices and a softer move in the dollar index.
The dollar index slips 0.1% to 99.882. EUR/USD is down 0.1% at 1.1534, GBP/USD falls 0.3% to 1.3451, and USD/JPY ticks up 0.1% to 157.753. Emerging-market and commodity currencies are mixed, with USD/BRL up 1.1% and USD/MXN down 0.3%.
