Dow leads as stocks split, oil drops and gold jumps
The biggest U.S. index climbs to a record while the Nasdaq, small caps and most sectors lose ground.
U.S. stocks end mixed, with the Dow up 0.5% to 54,349.1211 while the S&P 500 slips 0.2% to 7,723.5498, the Nasdaq falls 0.8% to 26,363.4395 and the Russell 2000 declines 0.6% to 3,019.188. The S&P 500 intraday path is choppy, then drifts lower into the close.
Sector performance is uneven. Health gains 1.3% and Materials adds 1.2%, while Financials rise 0.2% and Real Estate edges up 0.1%. On the downside, Energy falls 2.1%, Comm Svcs drops 1.0%, Utilities loses 1.0% and Tech slips 0.5%.
The headline backdrop points to a softer risk tone in parts of the market and a cooler volatility setup. The VIX falls 4.2% to 15.81, while the VIX 9-day sinks 18.2% to 13.79. At the same time, the 10-year Treasury yield slips to 4.617% and the 30-year yield to 5.174%.
Individual names are all over the map. Among the watchlist, Eli Lilly rises 4.9%, Disney adds 3.7% and Nvidia gains 3.4%, while AMD falls 7.0%, Uber drops 5.3% and Alphabet slips 4.0%. The marketwide losers list is led by SolarEdge, Teradata and Insulet, while Materion, Select Water Solutions and Shopify top the gainers.
