Asia and Europe split as Shanghai and Kospi rise
Most major overseas benchmarks finish mixed, with gains in Shanghai and Korea offset by weakness in France and the U.K.
Global equities split neatly by region. The Shanghai Comp. rises 1.1% and the Kospi gains 1.5%, while the Nikkei 225 edges down 0.2%. In Europe, the DAX adds 0.3%, but the CAC 40 falls 1.7%, the FTSE 100 slips 0.8%, and the Stoxx 600 closes down 0.7%.
The broadest Asia move comes from the Kospi, which is still up 14.8% over the last month even after today’s move. The Hang Seng loses 0.3%, and the Sensex falls 0.7%.
The policy backdrop stays in focus after headlines around Warsh’s Jackson Hole comments and inflation worries. Treasury yields are higher on the day, and the dollar index also rises, which can tighten conditions for overseas assets priced in dollars.
Across the major non-U.S. benchmarks, there is no single global risk-on signal. Some markets hold above their long-term averages, including the DAX, FTSE 100, Stoxx 600, Nikkei 225, and TSX, while others remain below them, including the Hang Seng and Sensex.
