Europe and Asia end mixed as energy stays in focus

Overseas markets split between gains in China and Brazil and losses across much of Europe and Asia.

Global equities do not move in one direction. The Shanghai Composite rises 1.1% and the DAX adds 0.3%, while the Bovespa gains 1.3%. At the same time, the Nikkei 225 falls 0.7%, the Hang Seng slips 0.3%, and the Kospi drops 2.1%.

Europe finishes mostly lower, with the FTSE 100 down 0.8%, the CAC 40 off 1.7%, and the Stoxx 600 down 0.7%. Reuters says the Stoxx 600 falls as oil prices jump, which matches the day’s stronger energy tape and higher crude prices.

Currency moves are modest. The dollar index rises 0.2% to 99.356, while EUR/USD adds 0.3% to 1.1625 and USD/JPY slips 0.3% to 159.72. AUD/USD and GBP/USD both edge higher, while USD/CAD and USD/MXN drift lower.

In commodities, the energy story stands out again. WTI crude jumps 3.9% to 86.62, Brent dips 0.6% to 88.8, and natural gas rises 1.7% to 2.936. Gold adds 0.7% to 4509.2998, while copper climbs 2.4% to 6.718.
