Dollar firms as the euro and pound lose ground
The greenback extends its recent run, while the euro and sterling weaken.
The dollar index rises 0.4% to 100.872. Against that backdrop, EUR/USD falls 0.4% to 1.1414, GBP/USD drops 0.7% to 1.3277, and AUD/USD slips 0.7% to 0.7071.
The yen also weakens, with USD/JPY up 0.3% to 157.921. USD/CHF rises 0.3% to 0.8229, USD/CAD gains 0.4% to 1.4089, and USD/MXN climbs 1.2% to 17.43.
Several emerging-market crosses move in different directions. USD/ZAR rises 0.8% to 16.3434, while USD/KRW falls 0.6% to 1364.96 and USD/CNY is nearly flat at 6.6969.
Reuters and FXStreet headlines both point to a hawkish Fed narrative supporting the dollar. FXStreet also cites a stronger U.S. dollar and Fed-rate expectations pressuring gold, silver, and several major currencies.
