Asia mostly rises, Europe mostly slips
Japan and South Korea post gains, but Hong Kong and much of Europe finish lower.
Global equities are mixed. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rises 1.4% and South Korea’s Kospi gains 1.0%, while Australia’s ASX 200 adds 0.4% and Brazil’s Bovespa climbs 0.7%.
The softer side of the map shows up in Hong Kong and Europe. The Hang Seng falls 0.8%, Shanghai slips 0.3%, the DAX loses 0.7%, the FTSE 100 dips 0.4%, the CAC 40 is little changed at down 0.1%, and the Stoxx 600 closes down 0.3%.
Reuters headlines point to a market backdrop shaped by oil, the Fed, and geopolitics. Oil prices retreat, the dollar hits a two-month high in Reuters coverage, and shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz stays below its 10-day average. CNBC also flags Trump-Xi talks that include AI safety and broader trade issues.
In Asia, the yen weakens as USD/JPY rises 0.3% to 157.921, while the dollar index gains 0.4% to 100.872. The euro falls 0.4% to 1.1414 and the pound drops 0.7% to 1.3277.
