Stocks slip as yields and oil keep pressure on risk
The major indexes close lower, while volatility and Treasury yields push higher.
U.S. stocks end the day in the red. The S&P 500 falls 0.8% to 7683.7, the Nasdaq Comp. loses 0.9% to 26820.4, the Dow drops 0.7% to 51481.5, and the Russell 2000 declines 0.7% to 2817.9.
The tape is not uniform under the surface. Industrials rise 0.9%, Tech adds 0.8%, and Financials gain 0.6%. Communication Services is the weakest sector, down 0.9%, alongside Energy, which falls 0.9%.
Volatility picks up. The VIX climbs 8.1% to 16.07, while the VIX 9-day jumps 12.8% to 14.39. Treasury yields also move higher, with the 10-Yr at 5.24% and the 30-Yr at 5.561%.
Stock-specific action is busy. Nvidia rises 1.7% and Intel falls 5.7% among the most active names, while the broad market’s biggest loser list includes MongoDB, down 18.5%, and Nu Holdings, down 10.0%.
