Chinese-made humanoid robot helps US researchers perform keyhole surgery

The procedure used a Unitree Robotics humanoid robot remotely controlled by surgeons at UC San Diego, while another robot managed the endoscope and tissue retraction.

SCMP Economy reports that US researchers at the University of California San Diego carried out keyhole surgery using a Chinese-made humanoid robot in the lead surgeon’s role.

According to the outlet, the general-purpose humanoid robot made by Unitree Robotics was remotely controlled by two surgeons as the team successfully removed a pig’s gallbladder.

SCMP Economy also said a second robot supported the operation by controlling the endoscope for monitoring and retracting tissue during the procedure.

UC San Diego professor Michael Yip, senior author of a paper on the surgery, told UCSD Today that remotely operated and autonomous humanoid robots could expand access to critical surgeries and help address healthcare crises in the US and worldwide.
