Trump reinstates blockade of Iranian ports and a 20% Hormuz charge
The blockade is set to begin at 16:00 Eastern Time on Tuesday, while US Central Command said forces will resume blockading maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports on 14 July.
President Donald Trump said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz after days of escalating strikes between the two countries, BBC Business reports.
Trump said the move would prevent “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, while “all other countries” would have “fair and open use” of the strait. The blockade is scheduled to be in effect from 16:00 Eastern Time on Tuesday.
According to BBC Business, Iran’s foreign minister said whoever provides safe passage should be compensated for that service, adding that Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN,” using Trump’s wording. The article also notes the US has said it struck Iranian military targets, including air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites.
BBC Business reports that Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain, and radars in Oman. Separately, US Central Command said its forces will resume blockading maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports on 14 July, while continuing to support traffic flow through regional waters for vessels not violating the blockade.
