Jeju weighs letting Chinese tourists drive rental cars

Jeju officials cited potential visitor spending, while the provincial government said the proposal is not reviewed or decided.

Jeju is considering a proposal to allow Chinese tourist drivers to rent and drive cars on the South Korean resort island, reviving an older controversy over safety, insurance, and legal loopholes, according to SCMP Economy.

On July 2, Jeju Vice-Governor Park Cheon-su said the change could boost visitor spending, noting that many independent foreign travelers are Chinese but currently cannot use rental cars. Park added that Jeju could consider offering several hours of driving training over a short period as part of easing regulations.

SCMP Economy also reported that the provincial government responded on July 4 with a statement saying the idea was not a reviewed or decided policy.
