Meta faces lawsuit alleging AI targeted workers with medical conditions

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Oakland, alleges Meta used AI and productivity signals in layoffs that began after a plan to cut about 10% of its global workforce.

Twenty-six former Meta Platforms employees have filed a lawsuit in federal court in Oakland, California, alleging the company used AI-powered software to help select workers for mass layoffs in a way that disproportionately harmed people with disabilities or those who took medical leave. The plaintiffs argue that Meta relied on factors such as productivity and AI token usage when it began cutting thousands of roles earlier this year.

The suit, filed late Monday, says the approach disadvantaged people who missed work due to medical conditions and violated federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination or retaliation against workers tied to disabilities, medical leave, or pregnancy. The plaintiffs are listed anonymously and include people from six states, including California and New York, plus the District of Columbia.

Meta previously said it planned to lay off 10% of its global workforce, nearly 8,000 people, beginning in May, with additional job cuts to follow later in the year. In response to the allegations, a Meta spokesperson said workforce decisions are made by people, not AI.
