Coinbase says AI now writes over 95% of its code
Coinbase also said it cut 700 staff in May, as it reorganized into smaller teams and said AI agents perform coding work equivalent to about 1,200 employees.
Coinbase says artificial intelligence is now involved in writing more than 95% of its code, according to remarks shared with Cointelegraph by Coinbase platform head Rob Witoff. Witoff said the use of AI spans a range, with core cryptography still requiring human input, while prototyping is fully automated and some core systems fall in between. He added that Coinbase is reorganizing around smaller, more senior teams, where two or three employees can handle work that previously required 10 or more people.
The companys shift in execution came alongside workforce reductions earlier this year. Coinbase cut 14% of its workforce, or 700 staff, in May, and Witoff said the changes affected many junior development roles as well as functions including marketing, legal, customer support, and compliance.
Coinbase told employees that AI has changed work pace “dramatically,” and Witoff said most engineers are running five to 10 AI agents at a time. He estimated that AI agents collectively perform coding work equivalent to about 1,200 employees, and said the company could see that scale rise to the equivalent of 100,000 employees by 2030, while its AI spending has remained flat despite growing token use, according to Cointelegraph.
