CMA investigates Euro Car Parks over petrol-queue charge fairness
The Competition and Markets Authority is also examining Euro Car Parks' appeals process and whether drivers face additional fees beyond the parking charge.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority has opened an investigation into Euro Car Parks over whether parking charges issued to drivers who are queuing at petrol station forecourts are fair, as part of a wider crackdown on private parking practices.
The CMA is assessing whether Euro Car Parks' broader appeals process for its petrol forecourt and car park operations could breach consumer protection law. The regulator says it has concerns about how some operators handle appeals, including attempts to make motorists pay extra fees on top of the parking charge.
The CMA said it is responding to complaints from motorists who say they were issued tickets unfairly, and it wants parking companies to treat drivers fairly at all stages, with a clear and consistent appeals process.
Euro Car Parks operates more than 3,000 facilities across the UK and Ireland, according to the company’s website, with more than two million cars parked in its spots every day, the report said, citing the company's figures.
