Over 10% of U.S. housing units were vacant in early 2026

In Q1 2026, about 89.7% of U.S. housing units were occupied, leaving 10.3% vacant, according to Census Bureau figures cited by Mortgage News Daily.

Mortgage News Daily cited U.S. Census Bureau data showing that in the first quarter of 2026, 89.7% of the roughly 150 million housing units in the United States were occupied, while 10.3% were vacant.

The outlet also broke down the inventory, saying owner-occupied units accounted for 59% and renter-occupied units accounted for 31%.

Mortgage News Daily noted that vacancies can happen for different reasons, and it suggested some vacant properties could potentially be sold to buyers who want them.
