AWS apologizes after glitch triggers extreme customer billing

Customers reported invoices that ranged from tens of millions to hundreds of billions of dollars for services that usually cost far less, according to accounts described by the Guardian.

Amazon Web Services has apologized to customers after a computer glitch led to billing messages with extremely high charges being sent worldwide, according to the Guardian Business.

The outlet described cases where customers saw invoices far above their normal subscription costs, including a UK charity whose AWS bill rose to $7.8 billion from a previous monthly charge of 43 cents, and a Delhi student whose $1.28 monthly payment was replaced by a $10.9 billion charge.

In Derbyshire, another customer said her bill was reported at $245 billion, despite typical charges of around $15 per month, adding that the situation caused a period of “extreme stress.”

The Guardian Business also noted that AWS customers with monthly subscriptions usually costing little more than everyday items reported panic after the erroneous invoices arrived, and AWS said it was apologizing for any confusion and concern around the costs.
