Taiwan recall follows soybean salad oil contamination with BaP

Taiwanese authorities said the Taichung maker produced about 28,992 tonnes of soybean salad oil in 30 batches from April to June, supplying three large food companies.

A major food safety scandal in Taiwan is now becoming a political liability for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ahead of November local elections, as regulators move to contain a contamination issue involving soybean salad oil, according to SCMP Economy.

The problem centres on oil produced by Central Union Oil Corporation, which Taiwan’s food authorities said contained excessive levels of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). Authorities said the Taichung-based manufacturer produced about 28,992 tonnes of soybean salad oil across 30 batches between April and June, supplying Fwusow Industry, Formosa Oilseed Processing and Taisun Enterprise.

Contamination was first detected by downstream food-maker Namchow Group on May 13 during routine testing. The manufacturer was informed on June 11 but did not notify regulators until June 30, and the government later announced the issue and recall measures on July 3, SCMP Economy reported.
