U.S. tariffs on Canada target alcohol, dairy and motor vehicles

The White House said the new duties include up to 50% tariffs on Canadian alcohol, dairy and motor vehicle exports, raising the risk of renewed retaliation during the USMCA review.

Forexlive reports the White House has imposed fresh tariffs on Canadian alcohol, dairy and motor vehicle exports, citing discrimination against U.S. commerce in those sectors.

The new round includes duties of up to 50%, and a separate statement also confirmed an additional 50% tariff on certain Canadian products more broadly.

The announcements land as the United States and Canada move through an annual review process tied to the US Mexico Canada Agreement, after the U.S. declined on July 1 to automatically renew the USMCA and shifted to year to year negotiations while the pact remains in force through 2036.

Forexlive adds that currency and cross border equity investors are likely to watch for any read through to the Canadian dollar and to auto supply chains, given North American manufacturing integration, and says the move could be interpreted as Washington continuing to use tariffs as leverage beyond the current review timeline.
