US warns Iran is not serious about talks and must not control Hormuz
The US said the Strait of Hormuz remains Tehran’s biggest leverage and warned Iran should not be allowed to control it.
Forexlive reports US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Iran is not serious about talks, saying Washington will respond in kind depending on whether Tehran engages. Rubio added that the US is focused on protecting its interests and those of its allies.
The comments also centered on the Strait of Hormuz, with Rubio asserting Iran should not be allowed to control the waterway. The analysis cited notes that control of the strait remains Iran’s biggest leverage over the US at present.
The piece argues there is no plausible scenario in which Iran would give up control of the Strait of Hormuz without confrontation, given that both sides have red lines they will not move on. It also suggests Iran could continue a strategy of buying time rather than reaching an agreement.
On the US side, the analysis said Washington is unlikely to push for a full scale war, citing political constraints ahead of midterm elections. It added that escalation would carry unfavorable optics for the Trump administration, according to the source.
