ECB keeps key interest rates unchanged and stays data dependent

The ECB said the deposit facility, main refinancing operations, and marginal lending facility will remain at 2.25%, 2.40%, and 2.65%, respectively.

The European Central Bank kept its three key interest rates unchanged, saying it will rely on incoming economic and financial data to determine the appropriate policy stance going forward. In its statement, the ECB emphasized that it is not committing to any predetermined path for rates.

The ECB attributed part of its cautious approach to ongoing uncertainty around energy prices. It said the outlook for energy is near the baseline from the June Eurosystem staff projections, but remains well above levels seen before the Middle East conflict, with the full inflation impact of the energy shock still not fully played out.

According to the ECB, the Governing Council is closely monitoring the intensity and duration of the energy shock, along with potential indirect and second-round effects on inflation. The bank reiterated that it is committed to ensuring inflation stabilizes at its 2% target in the medium term.

The ECB also said its asset purchase programs are shrinking at a measured pace because the Eurosystem no longer reinvests principal payments from maturing securities. It added that the Transmission Protection Instrument remains available to counter unwarranted, disorderly market dynamics that could impair monetary policy transmission, and that the ECB President will comment at a press conference starting at 14:45 CET.
