Gary Stevenson quits YouTube channel citing health concerns
His weekly channel had grown to 1.64 million subscribers, and he said his videos had become harder to make as he grew more tired.
Gary Stevenson, the former City trader who became known through his weekly YouTube channel Gary’s Economics, has announced he is quitting the platform, citing health concerns. He made the announcement in a 48-minute address to the camera, according to The Guardian.
Stevenson said it would be his last weekly video, describing the work as “harder and harder” as he had got more tired. He posted an abridged 18-minute signoff on social media on Sunday morning.
The Guardian noted that Gary’s Economics took off during the Covid pandemic and grew to 1.64 million subscribers. Stevenson is also described as a wealth tax campaigner who has argued for a 2% tax on individual wealth over £10 million, which he said would raise £24 billion a year for the Treasury.
The announcement came after a mixed reaction to a Channel 4 documentary released last month, How to Get Filthy Rich with Gary Stevenson. The Guardian said left-leaning tax experts and rightwing critics alike were skeptical of his message, with one review calling it a “faintly embarrassing waste of time,” while a quoted tax lawyer urged him to separate feelings about inequality from a rational assessment of policy tools.
