Prediction markets like Polymarket draw UK interest, aided by US-style workarounds
The Guardian says Polymarket data feeds in real time, letting users see odds spikes shortly after sports events unfold.
Online prediction markets such as Polymarket have grown in popularity in the US and are now attracting attention in the UK, where some users appear to be able to sidestep parts of local regulation. The outlet describes how a Reading man, who does not gamble, watched a Polymarket odds graph during Argentina’s World Cup match, using the platform’s near-time pricing to give the impression he could predict what was coming next on his TV feed. The article attributes much of the platforms’ momentum to the US regulatory landscape. Since the US Supreme Court lifted a federal ban on sports wagering in 2018, American states have regulated at uneven speeds, while Polymarket and Kalshi have also argued to regulators that their products function as financial trading rather than traditional gambling.
