AMD shares rise after deal to supply Anthropic with AI accelerators
Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD MI450 AI accelerators starting in the first half of 2027, and AMD also plans to invest up to $5 billion in the AI startup.
AMD shares gained after the chipmaker announced a multi year strategic partnership with AI startup Anthropic, extending its push in AI infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's MI450 AI accelerators beginning in the first half of 2027. The deployment will use AMD's Helios rack scale platform, with MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking technology, and ROCm software to support future generations of Claude AI models.
AMD also said it plans to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as the companies work to expand AI infrastructure. CEO Lisa Su said the collaboration pairs Anthropic's frontier AI expertise with AMD's high performance computing platform to speed AI adoption at scale.
The announcement came as AMD shares rose 1.45% on July 22. Yahoo Finance cites KeyBanc analyst John Vinh, who estimates the full 2 gigawatt deployment could generate about $27.2 billion in revenue for AMD, positioning the company as a credible alternative to Nvidia in the AI accelerator market.
