Whitbread to close all remaining Beefeater restaurants by Sept 2026
The closures are part of a Whitbread restructuring plan to cut annual costs by £250 million, and the company expects to sell some sites to raise about £1.5 billion.
Whitbread confirmed plans to shutter all remaining Beefeater restaurants in the UK by September 2026, ending the long-running family-friendly steakhouse chain that at its peak had about 140 standalone locations and Brewers Fayre brewery-attached sites across the UK and Ireland.
Whitbread is pursuing a restructuring strategy aimed at lowering annual costs by £250 million, while some restaurant sites are expected to be converted into hotel rooms and unbranded hotel restaurants within its hospitality portfolio.
The company also said it estimates it can free up £1.5 billion through selling some locations. Whitbread told customers that Beefeater and other UK branded Beefeaters will close on Thursday, 10 September 2026.
As part of the shift, the Beefeater loyalty scheme tied to repeat visits will be shut down by Aug. 31, and Whitbread said about 3,800 employees are registered to work for Beefeater as of 2026, with some roles potentially transferable within the wider hospitality business, according to Yahoo Finance.
