62% of U.S. households cut back on protein as grocery prices rise
In a July 2026 survey of 3,042 adults, 43% said they scaled back most on beef, and 47% reported swapping beef for vegetarian proteins like beans or lentils.
A 2026 survey found that rising grocery prices are forcing many U.S. households to reduce how they buy and eat protein, with 62% of respondents saying they have cut back on either the quantity or the type of protein they purchase.
According to data from MarketBeat Ratings, the survey of 3,042 adults conducted in July 2026 asked households whether they reduced meat or fish consumption, switched to cheaper cuts or private label products, reduced portion sizes, or replaced animal protein with lower cost alternatives such as eggs, beans, or lentils.
The results showed beef as the most affected protein, with 43% of respondents identifying it as the protein their household scaled back on most. Fish and seafood followed at 10%, while chicken or turkey was cited by 8% and pork by 7%.
Almost half of respondents, 47%, said they have swapped beef for vegetarian protein sources such as beans or lentils, reflecting shifts in meal planning and portioning as grocery costs rise.
