Andy Burnham warns virtual interviews miss young workers' personality

Housing and jobs policy may not seem like a market beat, but BBC Business reports UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is urging employers to rely less on virtual job interviews, saying online formats fail to capture candidates' personality and passion.
According to the BBC, the comments come as firms use AI to sift applications and shift toward online interviews amid concerns that some young applicants experience the process as robotic, while official figures show more than one million people aged 16 to 25 are not in education, employment, or training.
Burnham said he worries technology is not making recruitment fairer, arguing virtual interviews may favor people who can provide more formulaic answers, according to the outlet.
He also referenced broader youth employment warnings, including that a review led by former minister Alan Milburn found job and career opportunities are not growing but shrinking, and said the government should consider prioritizing longer work placements and expanding access to technical education routes.
