UnitedHealth posts Q2 profit gains and raises 2026 guidance

The insurer lifted full-year adjusted earnings guidance to $19.50 to $20.0 per share after second-quarter adjusted EPS of $6.38.

UnitedHealth Group reported second-quarter results that it framed as further proof its turnaround is gaining traction, following the steep stock decline it faced last year. MarketBeat Ratings highlights that the company serves more than 48.5 million people across commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid, with Optum supporting over 120 million consumers through care delivery, pharmacy, and technology operations.

For the quarter, UnitedHealth posted revenue of $112.0 billion and earnings from operations of $8.0 billion, up from $5.2 billion a year earlier. UnitedHealthcare accounted for $86.0 billion of revenue and $3.9 billion in earnings, while Optum generated $65.7 billion in revenue and $4.0 billion in earnings.

Adjusted second-quarter earnings per share came in at $6.38, compared with $4.08 a year ago, and above the $4.94 analyst consensus cited by MarketBeat Ratings. The company also raised its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings guidance to a range of $19.50 to $20.0 per share.

MarketBeat Ratings also notes the drivers behind the improvement, including progress on higher medical costs, portfolio changes, and pressure on profitability. It points to a second-quarter net margin of 4.9% and operating cash flow of $11.1 billion, reported as 1.9 times net income.
