Eurozone core inflation accelerates to 2.5%, bolstering hawkish ECB bias

July core CPI rose to 2.5% year-over-year from 2.4%, while services inflation edged up to 3.3% from 3.2%, pointing to persistent domestic price pressures.

Eurozone inflation stayed elevated in July, with headline CPI at 2.9% year-over-year, unchanged versus expectations and up from 2.8% in June, according to Action Forex. The report showed that energy still drove much of the headline increase, but the main surprise was a faster rise in core inflation.

Core inflation accelerated to 2.5% from 2.4%, beating forecasts for no change, Action Forex said. The details suggested inflation is broadening beyond energy, with services inflation rising to 3.3% from 3.2%, and non-energy industrial goods firming to 0.9% from 0.7%.

Energy inflation also jumped sharply from 8.5% to 10.0% as higher oil prices fed into consumer prices, while food, alcohol and tobacco inflation eased to 1.2% from 1.5%. Action Forex said the combination implies underlying pressures are proving more persistent than markets expected.

For the European Central Bank, the figures add to the case for a cautious hawkish stance, Action Forex noted, referencing President Christine Lagarde’s view that inflation may remain above target well into 2027. The outlet said the data lower the hurdle for a September “insurance hike,” even though it does not make another rate increase certain.
