China conducts submarine missile test in Pacific for first time since 1982

The July 6 launch sent a dummy warhead about 8,000 km, and it is expected to strengthen China’s nuclear “strike-back” capability.

China’s People’s Liberation Army carried out a missile test in the Pacific on July 6, according to reporting from SCMP Economy. The test involved a dummy warhead that traveled about 8,000 km, SCMP Economy said, marking the first confirmed submarine-based missile test since 1982.

SCMP Economy reported that the launch is also the first known firing from a nuclear-powered submarine. The outlet said the specific missile type has not been officially confirmed, but a Global Times report suggested it could be the JL-3, which can be fired from nuclear-powered submarines.

The intercontinental-range ballistic missile is expected to become a key pillar of China’s nuclear arsenal, according to SCMP Economy, with the goal of improving the ability to strike back after an attack. The JL-3 also made its first public appearance at a military parade in Beijing last September, SCMP Economy added.
