Japan and US coordinate to defend yen, Rabobank strategist says

Rabobank argues the cooperation would also help shield US Treasury borrowing costs from yen weakness.

Rabobank senior market strategist Benjamin Picton said coordinated action between the US Treasury and Japan’s Ministry of Finance aims to defend the Japanese yen (JPY), describing it as a potential shift in how currency markets are managed.

In his view, the effort supports the yen and helps protect US Treasury borrowing costs, while also suggesting a move away from a post Bretton Woods period where the US dollar has been the dominant free floating currency.

The strategist framed the yen intervention as a significant signal for capital markets, pointing to the joint approach as evidence of tighter cross policy coordination.

The commentary was published by FXStreet as part of its insights coverage.
