Key stocks set for earnings week as option volatility spikes

A preview of earnings season argues implied volatility typically runs higher ahead of results, then falls after the announcements.

Yahoo Finance highlights that Aug 3 to Aug 7 is set up to be a pivotal earnings week, with major names including SpaceX, Advanced Micro Devices, Palantir Technologies, Sandisk, Uber Technologies, McDonald's, Caterpillar, Merck & Co., Disney, Shopify, and Arista Networks among those reporting.

The outlet says option implied volatility is usually elevated before earnings because uncertainty over the results drives demand from both speculators and hedgers, which pushes up option prices. After the earnings announcement, implied volatility typically drops back toward normal levels.

The preview outlines a simple way traders estimate an “expected range” around earnings: add the at-the-money put and at-the-money call prices from the first expiry date after the earnings date, and use that as a reasonably accurate move estimate.

Finally, it notes that option strategies often depend on whether a trader expects the stock to stay within or break outside the expected range, and it recommends risk defined approaches and keeping portfolio impact small if a position moves sharply against expectations.
