Papa Murphy's to close 68 underperforming corporate stores

The closures follow a review of its corporate-owned store portfolio and aim to improve quality and profitability, the company said.

Papa Murphy's will close 68 underperforming corporate-owned stores as part of efforts to improve the quality and profitability of the business, according to the chain’s disclosures in its second-quarter period.

The decision comes as the broader pizza category has faced pressure from declining restaurant counts since 2019, along with inflation-driven changes in consumer ordering and margin headwinds linked to third-party delivery services.

The chain said customers have been shifting to smaller pizzas with fewer toppings, a trend industry coverage links to both pricing pressure and longer-term structural shifts such as the rise of GLP-1 medications affecting portion sizes and order frequency, according to Nation's Restaurant News.

Papa Murphy's, which sells take-and-bake pizzas customers cook at home, has grown to more than 1,000 locations across 34 states, based on its store locator page, even as other national pizza operators have closed hundreds of restaurants.
