Japan real wages rise for sixth straight month, supporting BOJ normalization
Nominal cash earnings increased 3.4% year over year in June, while special earnings, including bonuses, rose 3.5%, helping keep upward inflation risks in focus for the BOJ.
Japan’s wage growth stayed strong in June, reinforcing the Bank of Japan’s case for continued policy normalization, according to Action Forex. Real wages rose 1.6% year over year, matching May’s upwardly revised gain and extending a sixth consecutive monthly increase, the longest positive streak since 2021.
The report also highlighted momentum in pay growth beyond real wages. Nominal cash earnings climbed 3.4% year over year, with monthly increases above 3% for five months, the longest such stretch in more than 34 years, and special earnings that include bonuses rising 3.5%.
Summer bonuses provided additional support, topping JPY 1 million on average for the first time since comparable records began in 1981, reflecting healthy corporate profitability. Separately, Japan’s largest business lobby, Keidanren, said major companies agreed to average wage increases of 5.37%, exceeding 5% for a third consecutive year.
Action Forex said the latest wage data align with recent surveys showing firms raising selling prices at one of the fastest rates in nearly two decades. Together, the figures support the BOJ’s view that upside inflation risks remain, keeping the door open to further interest rate hikes in the months ahead.
