US refunded about $100bn in tariffs after Supreme Court ruling

More than half of the $166bn collected under tariffs struck down in February has been returned, with refunds including duties plus interest.

The Trump administration has completed roughly $100 billion in refunds of unlawful tariffs, according to a court filing discussed by Reuters and attributed to customs officials, with the payments certified and sent to the U.S. Treasury for disbursement.

Forexlive reports that the refunded total includes duties plus interest, and it represented more than half of the $166 billion collected under tariff measures invalidated by the Supreme Court in February.

The cash refunds could provide a near-term working capital boost for importers that paid the duties, particularly businesses reliant on affected trading relationships.

However, Forexlive notes the broader trade policy picture remains unsettled, as the administration has moved to replace struck down tariffs with new duties under alternative legal authorities, including Section 301 and additional IEEPA-adjacent measures, while political criticism has focused on refunds flowing to corporate importers rather than consumers.
