IonQ said it has moved quantum computing into live commercial infrastructure by launching the Tennessee Quantum Communications Research Center, a joint venture with Chattanooga’s EPB. The project installs commercial quantum memory units into a functioning fiber optic network, targeting utility sector optimization such as load balancing, voltage drop mitigation, and reduced electrical losses.
The company linked the deployment to real-time challenges on power grids, including Unit Commitment problems where classical computers struggle to optimize distribution routes as demand changes.
