Retirees weigh withdrawing from $2.3 million portfolio for 2.9% mortgage

MarketWatch highlights a couple’s retirement financing dilemma: they have a $2.3 million investment portfolio and a $300,000 mortgage with a 2.9% interest rate.

The couple says they are withdrawing about $100,000 per year from their investments right now, as they evaluate whether to use additional portfolio withdrawals to pay off the mortgage.

The question is whether continuing to withdraw from the fund, versus paying down the mortgage, best fits their retirement plan, given their current spending and withdrawal rate.
