AI build-out supports construction and infrastructure jobs outside Silicon Valley

US employers cut 23,000 jobs in July, but construction firms added 22,000, with most gains in nonresidential and infrastructure work as AI investment ramps.

Hiring is cooling across the US economy, but the AI build-out is still creating jobs, especially in construction and infrastructure, according to data highlighted by Yahoo Finance.

In July, US employers shed 23,000 jobs overall, while construction companies added 22,000. Nearly all of the hiring came from nonresidential and infrastructure categories, which added 126,000 jobs over the past year, while residential construction lost 44,000.

The hiring is concentrated in the same locations where AI investment is landing, including data centers, factories, and power infrastructure. Over the past year, nonresidential specialty trades added nearly 78,000 jobs, nonresidential building construction added 28,000, and heavy and civil engineering added 21,000, the outlet said.

Yahoo Finance also pointed to spending expectations for AI infrastructure, citing RSM chief economist Joe Brusuelas, who in June described a “historic cap-ex super cycle.” Brusuelas said the two-year run rate for AI infrastructure investment is $1.6 trillion, with expectations for $4.5 trillion to $5 trillion over the next five years, while smaller echoes showed up in July data for architecture and engineering (+4,600 jobs) and durable-goods manufacturing (+18,000 jobs).
