Nvidia opens commercial use of Alpamayo 2 Super for robotaxis

The reasoning model is part of Nvidia’s open licensing push via OpenMDW, and the company says it has surpassed major benchmark models while its data center revenue continues to expand.

Nvidia said it opened commercial use of Alpamayo 2 Super on August 4, positioning the reasoning model for robotaxis and self-driving cars as the company’s next growth area, even as investors debate how to value its core chip business. The model is marketed as the newest in Nvidia’s most-downloaded family of open reasoning models for autonomous driving on Hugging Face, with the lineup topping 500,000 downloads. Nvidia also said Alpamayo 2 Super ships under OpenMDW 1.1, a license from the Linux Foundation, allowing automakers and suppliers to fine-tune and sell products built on it without seeking additional permission from Nvidia. Nvidia claims Alpamayo 2 Super performed strongly on the LingoQA driving benchmark, beating Gemini 2.5 Pro by 15.1 points and GPT-4o by 23.2 points, and it can generate a full driving trajectory with an accompanying plain-language explanation intended to support safety review as well as model evaluations. The release builds on Nvidia’s growing autonomous-vehicle compute business, with trailing 12-month revenue up 71% to $253 billion. In addition, Nvidia reported that data center revenue rose 92% year over year to $75.2 billion, and it said it raised its quarterly dividend to $0.25 per share while authorizing an $80 billion buyback. The article also notes that Alphabet, Amazon, and SpaceX have pointed to higher computing demand, while Nvidia’s stock has cooled in reaction to recent earnings, and it is scheduled to report fiscal second-quarter results again on August 26.
