Job seekers use hidden prompts in resumes to manipulate AI screening
A Duke University analysis of about 200,000 resumes found at least 1% included prompt injections to influence AI-based screening outcomes.
Job seekers are increasingly using prompt injection, hiding invisible instructions in resumes to try to manipulate how AI tools rank or advance candidates, according to Yahoo Finance.
The tactic relies on techniques such as white or concealed text, which remains readable to AI processing even when the prompts are not visible to human reviewers. A 2025 Society for Human Resource Management survey cited by the outlet found about 51% of organizations use AI to support recruiting.
Yahoo Finance also highlights that researchers at Duke University analyzed roughly 200,000 real-world resumes and found at least 1% contained prompt injections intended to manipulate AI screening systems. The outlet adds that a 2026 study published by the Association for Computational Linguistics found prompt injection can affect candidate ranking, particularly when relatively few applicants use it.
As more applicants adopt similar tactics, the 2026 study found the strategy's effectiveness weakens, while employers continue using AI to sort applications, summarize resumes, and compare candidates.
