Burger King regains US No. 2 spot as Wendy's slips
Burger King said its U.S. same store sales rose 8.5% in the second quarter, while Wendy's reported a 7.0% decline.
Wendy's has lost its position as the No. 2 burger chain in the United States, ending a six year run as it was overtaken by a resurgent Burger King, according to Yahoo Finance.
The shift was tied to performance at Burger King and Wendy's. Burger King said domestic same store sales jumped 8.5% in the second quarter, while Wendy's reported a 7.0% decline in U.S. same store sales, its sixth straight quarter of contraction.
Wendy's new CEO Bob Wright said its competitive edge has weakened as customers pulled back, adding that the chain is taking action across five areas, including rebuilding its menu value, increasing marketing to drive demand, improving operations, expanding a digital experience, and pushing restaurants as a growth engine.
Yahoo Finance also noted Wendy's previously moved past Burger King about six years ago, helped by its breakfast rollout, but Burger King has invested in restaurant upgrades, advertising, and menu changes through Restaurant Brands International's U.S. turnaround effort launched in late 2022. Burger King President Tom Curtis said improvements are bringing customers back, and the chain has introduced a Whopper quality guarantee.
