Larry Fink says Americans can help fund $10 trillion AI buildout via retirement

BlackRock’s CEO estimates data center and energy infrastructure spending could reach $10 trillion over the next 10 years, with large tech firms already spending tens of billions to secure chips and electricity.

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said ordinary Americans can help provide capital for the AI infrastructure buildout through retirement accounts and investments that hold stakes in companies powering the technology, according to Yahoo Finance.

Fink estimated the nationwide expansion of data centers and related energy infrastructure could total $10 trillion over the next 10 years, as major technology companies spend tens of billions of dollars on data centers, chips, and electricity capacity required for artificial intelligence, the outlet reported.

Yahoo Finance also cited McKinsey’s estimate that AI-related data center infrastructure investment could require up to $7 trillion by 2030, framing the scale of the capital needed using World Bank data that compares the figure to the combined GDP of Germany and Spain.

The piece added that tech leaders such as Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta are among the companies driving the spending, and argued that retirement plans like 401(k)s may already be exposed to the AI boom through existing holdings, though it did not provide specific fund allocations.
