Wesley Batista to return as JBS group CEO in January

JBS said the leadership handover follows succession planning, alongside a second-quarter loss of $102 million despite 14% higher sales to $23.9 billion.

JBS said Wesley Batista Filho will return to lead the Brazil-headquartered meatpacker as group CEO starting in January, restoring top management under the controlling Batista family shareholders. The company said Gilberto Tomazoni, who has served as group CEO for the past eight years, will step down as CEO to become vice chairman of the board, while also acting as a senior adviser after the transition.

Batista will move from his current role as CEO of JBS USA, the group’s US business. He and his brother Joesley control J&F Investimentos, the holding company that majority owns JBS.

JBS linked the change to what it called a commitment to thoughtful succession planning. The announcement also came with results for the second quarter, when the company reported a loss of $102 million, even as sales rose 14% to $23.9 billion, with EBITDA, operating income and EPS all falling.

The article notes Batista entered JBS in 2011 and has headed the North American business since 2023, with prior roles including leading the Canada business and serving as CEO of Brazil operations and the group’s Seara unit. It also references that he and his brother were charged in 2017 in connection with insider trading allegations involving foreign exchange trades and proceeds from share sales.
