Spotify will badge AI-generated artists and exclude them from recs
The AI Persona label will appear on artist profile banners and search results from mid-September, and artists marked this way will not show up in personalized recommendations unless users already follow them.
Spotify is rolling out an AI Persona badge to flag when an artist identity may be AI-generated. The feature, set to begin appearing on some profiles from mid-September, is designed to give listeners more transparency about who is behind the music they hear.
The badge will show on the banner and about section of artist profiles, and it will also appear in search notes and on tracks in playlists. Spotify says artists carrying the badge will not appear in users' personalized recommendations unless listeners already follow them.
Spotify said the change follows complaints from music fans who encountered profiles that appeared human before realizing they were AI-generated. The company also highlighted that the badge reflects an artist's public identity, not how the music was made, and it will review accounts that appear to meet its criteria.
For artists that receive the label after Spotify review, the streamer says they will be given a chance to self-disclose or appeal. Spotify also noted that it will mark whether an artist was transparent via its existing AI Credits feature or whether Spotify had to review the account.
