U.S. retail sales fall in July as gas prices cool and online demand dips

MarketWatch cited a pullback in spending at gas stations from cheaper fuel and weaker online purchases after Amazon’s summer sales.

U.S. retail sales in July declined, marking the largest drop in 14 months, according to MarketWatch.

The outlet said the slowdown was not tied to a broader economy sputtering, instead pointing to lower spending at gas stations as fuel prices fell.

MarketWatch also attributed softer retail activity to reduced online purchases following Amazon’s summer sales bonanza, linking the decline to shifts in consumer behavior rather than a single economic shock.
