Britain approves Eli Lilly's oral GLP-1 Foundayo for weight loss
The UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency authorized orforglipron for obese adults and certain overweight people, and Lilly said shares rose more than 2% on the news.
Eli Lilly cleared a key regulatory step in Europe after the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency authorized the company’s oral GLP-1 drug orforglipron, sold in Britain under the brand name Foundayo, on August 10.
The approval covers weight loss and weight maintenance in obese adults, and in select overweight individuals who have at least one weight-related health condition, with additional use aimed at improving blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes. Yahoo Finance said Eli Lilly’s stock rose more than 2% after the announcement.
Foundayo is positioned as a convenience-led alternative within the GLP-1 class: it is a small, non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist taken as a single daily tablet rather than an injection, and it can be dosed without food or water restrictions.
Commercially, the UK authorization is not the final step, because Foundayo is not yet available through the NHS. Yahoo Finance noted that access depends on a National Institute for Health and Care Excellence cost-effectiveness review, with a decision expected on November 18, while patients seeking the medicine before then would need to pay out of pocket or use private care.
