Credit card balances rise by $21 billion, debt anxiety climbs

U.S. credit card balances increased to about $1.26 trillion in Q2 2026, while a Ramsey Solutions survey found 62 million Americans worry about debt daily.

Americans added $21 billion to credit cards in the second quarter of 2026, bringing total balances to approximately $1.26 trillion, according to data cited by Yahoo Finance from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Yahoo Finance also highlighted findings from Ramsey Solutions’ latest State of Personal Finance in America report, which said about 62 million people worry about their debt every single day, with another 15% worrying weekly.

The survey further found broad debt anxiety across consumers, with 8 in 10 experiencing at least some debt anxiety, and it pointed to a gap between those with and without debt.

Ramsey Solutions’ guidance emphasized addressing debt through step by step planning, including building a $1,000 starter emergency fund to avoid relying on credit cards when unexpected expenses arise, according to the article.
