Microsoft gears up Maia 300 AI accelerator for September unveiling
The company is in talks with TSMC for capacity to manufacture more than 300,000 units by 2027, with a longer term goal of over 1 million units.
Microsoft is preparing to unveil its next generation Maia 300 AI accelerator as soon as September, aiming to scale homegrown AI silicon after two earlier attempts. Microsoft previously shipped Maia 100 in limited volume, while Maia 200 was delayed and deployed in narrower use cases.
The company has entered talks with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to secure manufacturing capacity for more than 300,000 Maia 300 units, with deliveries targeted for 2027. Microsoft also has a longer term goal of capacity for more than one million units, though the supply timeline could be affected by constraints.
Microsoft’s motivation is to reduce reliance on NVIDIA processors, which it says remain the industry standard for AI training. By owning more of the hardware value chain, Microsoft also plans to pitch Maia 300 to external customers, including Anthropic, according to MarketBeat Ratings.
Microsoft is also positioning Maia 300 on performance and scale, noting that its hardware claims include 30% better performance per dollar than its prior generation, and that Maia 200 uses more than 140 billion transistors with 216GB of HBM3e memory. The supply chain beneficiary is expected to be TSMC, and the key investor question is whether customers with a real choice adopt Maia over NVIDIA GPUs.
