Baidu drops 13% after Q2 revenue slips and AI pivot disappoints
Baidu reported Q2 revenue down 4% year over year to $4.6 billion, and its adjusted EPS missed expectations while investors weighed whether AI Cloud can offset weakness in traditional search advertising.
Baidu shares fell about 13% in Tuesday trading after the company reported second-quarter results that missed expectations, underscoring the difficulty of shifting from a search-driven business toward artificial intelligence, cloud services, and autonomous-driving initiatives, Yahoo Finance reported. Baidu said Q2 revenue declined 4% year over year to 31.3 billion yuan, or about $4.6 billion, while adjusted earnings per American Depositary Share came in at 7.22 yuan, or $1.06. The stock move also reflected concern that near-term growth from its AI pivot may not be strong enough to counter declines in its traditional advertising and search-related revenue. The report highlighted that Baidu's AI Cloud business remains a brighter spot, with AI Cloud revenue growing sharply as the company expands its infrastructure and AI offerings. Still, pressure on the legacy search business leaves investors balancing the promise of newer AI and cloud activities against uneven financial results from the transition. Yahoo Finance added that the market is effectively testing whether Baidu can convert AI spending into sufficient monetization quickly enough to justify a higher valuation, especially as deterioration in an important cash-generating segment continues.
